Levels
Enhance the life of your flat photographs
How to access your Levels command in Photoshop.
Step 1. Select image from the main menu, then scroll down to adjustment and select Levels.
ALT. You can use Command L from your keyboard which will give you the short cut to Levels dialogue.
Black tones
This refers to all the dark and black tones located on the left side of the histogram

Mid tones
Always in the middle inbetween the black and white, located in the middle of the histogram

White tones
This is actually a lighter tone or white, located on the right side of the histogram

The histogram represents a graphical representation of how the tones from black through to white are distributed in your picture.
The Lesson
What we need to achieve here, is a good even spread of tones from pure black through to pure white. By moving the black tones slider to the right you can slow achieve a nice light blue black in your picture. Then by moving the white tones slider to the left your photograph will turn more brighter and have more contrast.

How I achieved the enhancement on the sample picture.
Step 1.
Move the Black Tones slider from 0 to 5 slightly towards the right.

Step 2.
Move the Mid Tones slider from 1.00 to 1.81 slightly towards the left. At the point you should be seeing a noticable difference in the photograph

Step 3.
Move the White Tones slider from 255 to 201 slightly to the left. Finally the photograph appears to be brighter and have more contrast.
